Indian Super League Comes to Terra Virtua

On Sept 23 2021 the Indian Super League (ISL) announced that it entered into a partnership with the top NFT marketplace, Terra Virtua (TVK). The exclusive 2-year deal will see Terra Virtua develop and a range of NFTs as digital collectibles ahead of the 2021–22 season.

The ISL launched in October 2013 with the goal of growing the sport of football in India The league comprises 11 clubs with the season running from November to March.

ISL is BIG. Massively BIG. Insanely Big. And Growing

Star Sports, one of the organisers of the Indian Super League, also serves as the official broadcasters of the league in India. Star Sports broadcasts the ISL through eight channels in five different languages in reaching 85% of the Indian television audience. Hero ISL 2020–21 is being live broadcast in 83 countries across TV and digital platforms.

According to Broadcast Audience Research Council India (BARC)

“ISL viewership of 28 billion viewing minutes on Star Network channels, which is the official broadcaster of the ISL. According to Broadcast Audience Research Council India (BARC), TV viewership saw over 50 percent growth during the sixth season of ISL with the league registering 28 billion viewing minutes on Star Network channels, which is the official broadcaster of the ISL.

In addition, video streaming platforms Disney+Hotstar saw 58 percent growth in terms of viewership as the league recorded 19 million digital viewership last year as compared to 12 million in 2018.”

Additionally, the ISL has a growing social media base with 4,157,729 likes on Facebook, 1.2 million followers on Instagram, and over 750,000 followers on Twitter.

According to Hoshedar Gundevia, ISL’s head of digital,

“Digital collectibles have been one of the most talked-about fan engagement avenues in 2021, and ISL being a young league, would like to keep pace with the demands of India’s millennial and Gen Z audience segments. Digital collectibles offer innovative opportunities for the league and its clubs to connect with the growing Indian football market and attract new audiences.”

The Indian Super League: A Lucrative Deal

The ISL is India’s first sporting division to launch NFTs (aka Digital Collectibles) with the exclusive 2-year deal it signed with Terra Virtua. The deal will benefit the ISL, the 11 clubs and many of the ISL players. The ISL teams have a huge combined fan-base and this partnership will see NFT providing a new tool to engage and reward their fans.

Terra Virtua was one of the first NFT marketplaces to launch in early 2019, after 4 years in development. They launched with an NFT range of Godzilla vs. Kong to support the release of Legendary Film Godzilla vs. Kong. They subsequently secured licensing partnerships with major film studios, tv networks, comic artists, musicians and now with partnerships of ISL, they have entered the world of NFT sports.

Terra Virtua has now had the exclusive rights to produce the ISL’s top moments and art as NFTs.

The deal includes player cards, custom NFTs for fans based on the league’s 11 teams. This is a win for Terra Virtua as it stands to get lots of traction within India and globally to ISL fans.

The deal is to begin at the beginning of the 2021/2022 season. Terra Virtua’s decision to partner with the Indian Super League centred around three reasons:

❖ It is a young league with a Gen Z audience in India.

❖ The league is innovative to include added benefits after owning NFTs.

❖ It is an opportunity for Terra Virtua to redefine sports collecting.

According to Terra Virtua’s CEO and founder Gary Bracey,

“The partnership signals a fundamental shift in the way sports fans will be able to engage with their favourite sports teams going forward, allowing them to collect and trade Interactive player merchandise and dynamic digital memorabilia with fellow fans.”

I believe that this Indian Super League Terra Virtua partnership will propel TVK into the unicorn club (1B Market Cap) as the league, teams, players and TV broadcaster all benefit from the success of launching NFT to their youthful viewers, in India and globally.
